Wood fences make excellent wildfire boundary defenses when they are fire treated and a horizontal ember base is applied at the bottom, where embers land and pile. Day one is the fire chemistry, sprayed on the fence. Day two is the clear or colored penetrating finish that keeps water and UV off it. The same treated boards close in under open decks to block ember attacks, and the defense holds even when the risk comes from a neighbor who does nothing. The fence pictured was fire treated and stained more than eight years ago.
